We know him to be the leader of the Fauvist movement as he forged his own distinct style of art. Andre Derain, along with Henri Matisse, was one of the founding fathers of Fauvism. He is also known to be one of the Fauvist movements most untamed artists. He was influenced by Vincent van Gogh, as were many of the Fauves. He did not adhere to the style of the Impressionists. As an alternative, he preferred to use broad and irregular brush strokes of color. In 1905, he worked along side Matisse to carry the method towards maturity. Works of the Fauves Henri Matisse’s painting The Open Window, Collioure was a painting created during the Fauvist movement. The view in this painting is overflowing with light. It is vibrantly painted and inviting to those that look at it. The red colored masts atop the blue boats drift on pink waves. The sky is colored with shades of blue, pink, and purple. You can see a reflection of bright green color in the glass of the window that frames the outdoor scenery. The walls that surround the view are violet just to the right of the window and turquoise to the left. One would note that these are not the natural colors that would be in such as scent and this painting created an outrage in its original exhibition. The people of his time were not ready for an art such as this. Raoul Dufy’s Open Window was painted much differently than that of Henri Matisse. While his colors were bright like the typical fauvist painting, they were placed much more realistically. This painting shows a living room scene with a window opened to the outside world. When peering outside, you will see that the water and the sky are realistically painted different shades of blues. The houses set upon the hill are white with red tile-like roofs. The room itself has reds and blues and there is a mirror to the right that reflects the balcony scene outside the window as it truly is. Although the shades are much brighter than what is true to life, the colors themselves that are used are as they should be. You can see that Dufy did not push the extent of Fauvism the way that Matisse did in his similar painting. Perhaps he wasn’t willing to take the risk that Henri Matisse did. In 1906, Andre Derain created a painting entitled Charing Cross Bridge. Derain displayed his preference for bright colors. In this painting you see a scene that contains mostly water. The water is unrealistically colored red, green, gold, and blue. There is a blue bridge that crosses over the water and to the left of the paintings are various small buildings that appear to be shops and maybe restaurants. They are of different shades of blue and small sections of green and red. Five boats of deep blue color are lined up next to the shops in the red section of the water. In the background, there are tall skyscraper buildings that are green and blue, indicating that the scene is near a city. The sky is pink and orange with hints of yellow. This painting demonstrates Derain’s untamed style that he is well known for. Conclusion I personally am partial to the paintings of the Fauves. The use of color to display one’s feelings and emotions is extraordinary. I enjoy the bright vivid colors that they used. It’s unfortunate that this movement didn’t last longer than it did. It seems that Fauvism gave birth to several new and fresh styles of art. It is my feeling that perhaps the world was not quite ready for the type of art that these â€Å"wild beasts† created, but it was the beginning of things new and different.

Othello Essay In Shakespeare's Othello, the character Iago, Othello's lieutenant, is the cause of all the tragedy which comes to pass as the play progresses. Iago is the antagonist of the play, but rather than being the direct opponent to the tragic hero, Iago is a manipulator, opposing Othello not directly but through other characters whom he tricks into acting for him. In the first scene of the play, Iago gives the audience warning that he is not all that he seems when he says, I am not what I am. (I,i,65) He is first seen in this scene appearing to help Roderigo, a suitor to Desdemona, who has run off with Othello, the Moorish general of the Venician army. Iago hates Othello for another reason. Instead of choosing him to be his lieutenant, Othello chose Cassio, another foreigner, and relegated Iago to the position of his ancient. When Roderigo asks why Iago continues to serve Othello, in spite of how the general has treated him, Iago replies, I follow him to serve my turn upon him. (I,i,42) He goes on to give an example of how he intends to serve him, by acting like the perfect servant, while secretly enriching himself, and later says, In following him, I follow but myself. (I,i,58) From this, one might think that he is still fairly straightforward in his plans, that he merely intends to betray Othello at some later date. However, in the third scene, he shows the audience his ability to manipulate people, when he convinces Roderigo to follow him to Cyprus and to bring all of his money, presumably to win back Desdemona. After Roderigo has left to do what Iago has suggested, Iago says, Thus do I ever make my fool my purse. (I,iii,37 y9) Later, in Act IV, we find that Roderigo has been giving jewels to Iago to give to Desdemona, which Iago, it is implied, has sold for his own uses. Thus, it is seen that Iago is merely using Roderigo to further his own ends, just as he said he was only serving Othello to serve himself. Also at the end of the third scene, Iago sets forth his plan to take Cassio's position, by telling Othello that his lieutenant . . . is too familiar with his wife. (I,iii,402) It also comes out in this speech that he suspects Othello of committing adultery with his wife. Near the end of the first scene of the second act, Iago convinces Roderigo, who was observing Cassio's enthusiastic greeting of Desdemona, that Cassio and Desdemona have something going on between them. Thus manipulating Roderigo through his passion for Desdemona, Iago convinces him to provoke Cassio to anger, so that the lieutenant will be discredited in Othello's eyes and Iago can take his position. At the end of this scene, he again makes reference to his role not being what it seems: Knavery's plain face is never seen till us'd. (II,i,324) In the last scene, after Othello has killed Desdemona, all of Iago's schemes are revealed by his wife, who was his unwitting accomplice in his schemes. After she has betrayed him, he kills her and flees, only to be caught and brought to justice. Othello's flaw, as Iago pointed out, was that he was ? of a free and open nature,/That thinks men honest that but seem to be so,/And will as tenderly be led by the nose/As asses are. (I,iii,405-408) Thus, Iago's scheming and roleplaying character made it easy for him to manipulate Othello, which led to Othello's fall. From his actions in the play, one sees that Iago is a gifted manipulator of other people who uses underhanded schemes, manipulation of others, and betrayal at appropriate times. Thus, one could say that the whole play is a parable showing the vile success such tactics bring, and also showing the reward awaiting those who use them. This quote definitely also applies to poetry, for it is often said that to directly tell the reader the tone or the imagery in poetry is heavy-handed. Wilfred Owen, in his poem Dulce Et Decorum Est, uses imagery to brutal effect. Bent double like old beggars under sacks this simile brings to mind the poor, crippled, dirty beggar that has been through hardship after hardship. Everyone has experienced physical pain at some stage in their life thus the usage of pain in poetry is always going to affect the reader, for every  reader understands pain. Emotional or physical, none leave the trenches without experiencing it and by using it in poetry, the reader understands with perfect clarity what the poet is describing, just by imagining their own pain. I believe that each child learns at their own pace, and it’s important to accommodate each individual. To reference Pestalozzi, I also believe children have more meaningful learning experiences with hands-on activities and it allows them to draw their own conclusions because they are experiencing what they’re learning first hand. I believe it’s my job as a teacher to create an environment that encourages children to think critically and allow them to experience things first hand.I also understand that each child learns differently, and not every child is the same, and it’s my job as a teacher to accommodate them to the best of my ability and create an environment where children feel comfortable to ask questions or voice their opinions. My goal as a teacher is to be a good role model to my students. I want to be able to develop a relationship with each of my students. I to be able help children with their self esteem by promoting individuality and diversity .I also understand the importance of assessment and believe it’s my job to assess each student thoroughly to better understand them and help them through whatever they are struggling with. I also believe it’s important to create an environment that promotes a child’s autonomy, to help them draw their own conclusions and think critically to help them build skills early on that they will need throughout adulthood. Over all I want to be the one teacher in a child’s life who made a difference.I believe that one of my strengths is that I’m accepting of others. I come from a half Hispanic and half Irish family and I was immersed in both cultures. Although his words were precious to my ears, I was naà ¯ve and I did not think of their importance until a certain decision almost changed my life completely. My mentor passed on at the age of fifty three when I was in my third grade. Every time I remember of him, his words always come back to me. One thing about Anita is that she was courageous, caring and always dreamful of a beautiful future. Although she never said it in the very beginning, I knew for sure she loved me from the look in her eyes. For several occasions we would play baseball and skate in the streets. After about a year of this constant commitment to each other and care, Anita whispered to my ear: You are my hero, my sunshine, and my sunshine. This day we were in our home. I was alone and my parents had attended a friend’s birthday. I did not believe her words for the first time. It sounded like a dream answering my prayers and dreams. I truly loved Anita only that I had been afraid that she might leave me instantly after presenting my proposal. She had done it and the reason it sounded like a miracle to me. While waiting for Anita to give birth and hug my baby, I decided to start an awareness campaign to educate people about the dangers of unprotected sex. Together with my scouts’ members, we composed poems, songs, banners and posters to help the youth from doing a similar mistake like mine. We also informed the youth about the other dangers from drug abuse and all other risky behaviors with the aim of reforming them and making sure they realize the dreams. Our mission was highly reciprocated in our society and the reason many people respect us today for the initiative. After six years of pregnancy, Anita died from pregnancy complications. Hearing of this, I almost lost my senses for a few weeks. This was the culminating point of my life. After full recovery, I mobilized twenty scouts to help in educating the youth in the society from doing a similar mistake like mine. This would consequently lead to situation where theories will be formulated today and dismissed the following day. Political analysts use case studies to come up with comprehensive theories but fail to generalize them being afraid of criticism from independent similar theories. ‘The Organization of the American Political Science Association’ (2006)13 reported new developments in the scientification of political analysis. In the early 1960s, most political analysts used scientific means to build on the behaviorism during the early foundations of political science as a discipline. However, over the years, these theories have been challenged by different authors owing to their nature of lack of reliability and generalization. The line between facts and values has been a nightmare to most political scientists and other social scientists for a long time. Some held on the argument that values are facts, but in the real scientific world, a clear distinction between the two must be established. Epistemology As one of the key pillars of philosophy, epistemology concentrates on propositional knowledge. The political analysts utilize this approach by classifying certain elements of beliefs and values to be true or false. The results produce normative knowledge which deals with the evaluation and recommendation of what should be rather than what it is, or how it came to be. On the other hand, real science aims at creating a non-normative kind of knowledge which is based on facts or, in other words, the objective determination of what things are. While the real scientific world insists on knowledge being cumulative, the research methods used by previous experiments and results should be used as foundations of new work. Political analysts deal with variation in the settings of political arenas, governments and institutions in such a way that the conclusions from different studies yield different results. In their words, the repeatability, reliability and validity of the data obtained cannot be used to make a general observation. By presenting a systematic a systematic and well reasoned anticipation, science is able to make accurate predictions for future occurrence of events. Thus, science is in a position to generate predictions for the future. Social analysis fails in generalization of its theories and therefore most of its conclusions cannot be used to predict the occurrence of future events (Fay, 1996)14. Science relies on parsimony in an effort to give other researchers a chance to choose between alternatives. Scientists therefore prefer methodologies that give a vivid explanation of phenomena while maintaining few parameters. In real scientific research, deductive arguments must not necessarily be reached. These relate to arguments that are proved to be true â€Å"through the use of a series of logical statements to derive a conclusion based on true premises† (Buttolph Reynolds, 2012)15. Although deductive reasoning is used in political analysis, inductive reasoning prevails in most research work making inferences though observations and propositions (Buttolph Reynolds, 2012)16. This brings the issue of probabilistic explanation. In science, it is required that 100% accuracy be met prior to making any predictions. The use of inductive reasoning therefore forbids this practice of making prediction based on previous findings. In other words, every situation in political analysis requires an independent research and conclusion. For example, if a researcher was to research about the political situation in a country, say Britain, it would be wrong to make inferences about the United States using the results of the study. On the other hand, a scientific experiment could be reproduced to another similar case. For example, the behavior of bacteria inside a Petri dish could be used to make gene ral conclusions about the behavior of all similar bacteria. From the given example, several observations can be made. The situation of political institutions in Britain and America are likely to change with time. By the time the study was taken, several parameters such as the nature of economy and the general perceptions of the respondents will have changed. The scientific study of bacteria in the same environment and conditions will yield similar results day-in-day-out. We therefore concluded that the Petri dish experimental results are reproducible, valid and reliable. Reliability is important in this case in order to assess the practicability and efficiency of the materials used to gather the data (Martin, 1994)17. Conclusion The paper analyzed the scientific approach of research and made equal comparison to the study of political science. The scientific approach look more tangible and reflective results compared to the social science approach. The paper concluded that political analysis therefore cannot be classified as a scientific enterprise. For a long time, the study has based its reflections on descriptions obtained through observations. The fact that these systems are undergoing transformations to include statistical inferences suggests the birth of a new approach to the subject. At the moment, the scientific requirements for a theory to satisfy the discussed expectations of a scientific study do not allow the prevalent method in political analysis to be described as a scientific approach. Deductive reasoning may not be practical in political analysis since every time the research is carried out, the probability of obtaining different data is high.
